Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Awareness Program was organized by Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) with the theme: “Improving Productivity of Your Business by Adopting a Culture of Safety and Health” on Saturday, 23rd October 2021 at Tourist Camp, Kano. Four papers were presented: Behavior-based Safety; Good housekeeping Techniques; Improving Your Business through a culture of safety and health; and, Occupational Safety and Health in the Employee Compensation (ECA) Act 2010. Work-related accidents, injuries and ailments are rampant across the workplaces as most employers fail to realize and exercise their moral and legal responsibilities towards their employee’s wellbeing. So, what is Occupational Health and Safety?

Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety is the science that deals with the anticipation, evaluation and management of risks that arise in the workplace posing danger to the physical, mental and social wellbeing of employees in all occupations. However, occupational health and safety is possible only with the cooperation and participation of both employees and employers.
The Scope of Occupational Health and Safety

The scope of occupational health and safety encompasses:

  • Promoting and maintaining the overall well-being of workers in all occupations
  • Preventing occupational health risks among the workers
  • Protecting workers from risks associated with their occupation
  • Placing and maintaining workers in an occupational environment as per their physical and mental needs
  • Customization of work to workers

Noted Side Points to Ensure Safety at Workplaces:

  • A good, open and fair system
  • Proper procedures
  • Training users/workers on usage
  • Managing worker’s life outside the office to improve productivity
  • Established discipline
  • Appreciation/Motivation
  • Lead by example and learn how to do it yourself

NSITF offered training on safety at workplaces and other related topics at no cost to stakeholders, the secretariat only need a formal invitation in writing – Ibraheem Ladi Amosa
